Being a Libra

Harmony. Balance. No one wants to even things out like a Libra. Libra begins at the autumnal equinox, a time when the length of the day equals the length of the night, and Scales strive for such balance in all they do. Libras are charming, and their charm is primarily due to the rulership of Venus.
Scales see everything from both sides and have a great appreciation for art and beauty. As a yang, cardinal sign, they generate a great deal of activity as well, especially in starting things, like diplomatic relations with others. But Libra is an air sign as well and, like all air signs, has an active mind. In Scales’ case, this takes the form of looking at one side and then the other, weighing everything over and over again. Like other cardinal signs, Libra seems constantly in motion, moving around and enjoying life.

Positives and Negatives

Scales are social creatures, ready to share their experience with others, and quick to form partnerships. Friendly, popular, and attractive, they often are idealistic as well, eager to talk about their high principles and lofty ideas with any who will listen. But Scales can seem affected or insincere, too eager to compromise, or worse, indecisive. Scales are often so busy weighing each side of an issue that they can never come to a conclusion or decision. Also, in their need to please others, they may forget to please themselves. Scales need to be aware of their own needs and meet them, too,
not just those of other people. At their best, though, Scales understand that their strength lies in creating and maintaining relationships. Scales seek to find their perfect complement, their other half,
to complete the balance. They also want to find balance in other things, not just relationships.

Scales love to be loved and admired, and they give much in return as well. Constantly testing their powers of attraction, they may seem flirtatious and flighty, but all the while Scales are seeking their other half. Scales are romantics, too, and they love to “set the mood” for romance by creating an atmosphere of beauty to match their feelings. Air signs, Geminis, Aquarians, other Librans, with their easy talk and quick minds, are an obvious match for Scales, but there are interesting possibilities with Scales’ opposite, Aries, as well though each sign may believe the other too selfish. Scales can thrive with Leo’s generosity, or they may find the balance they seek through an adventure with Sagittarius.

Graceful Scales should pay attention to inner fitness as well as outer fitness; their tendency toward
lower back or kidney problems is a direct result of keeping things inside to avoid creating discord. As
in love, healthy Scales need to bring their ideals down to an earthly scale! Scales also can benefit from holistic aids like aromatherapy, and the lovely scents and properties of rose oil or jasmine can help create the inner harmony Scales seek. As a sign ruled by Venus, after all, Scales are very sensitive to smells all around them. For Scales, extra potassium may be needed to balance the water level in the body and stimulate the kidneys to eliminate wastes. Vitamin E, selenium, and vitamin P are very helpful for preserving the beauty of Libra.

Scales’ homes are lovely places, filled with objets d’art, reflections of the beauty of Librans themselves. True to their need for others, Scales are among the great hosts of the zodiac, filling their homes with other people as well as those people’s conversations, ideas, and, often, their music.
Scales also enjoy the comforts of life and will not hesitate to make certain that their home reflects them. Because Scales seek harmony and balance above all, this is what you will find in their homes.
But all that waffling we’ve mentioned can make life with Scales rough going at times. Their constant weighing of things can make decision time difficult, and their ideals can mean they seek a harmony impossible to find here on Earth. Still, this reflects in a home that is singularly lovely, as befits the home of a Venus-ruled sign!

Social Libras shine at work: They are often leaders, showing others the way, but with their need for balance and harmony, they are often partners, too, using their knack for balance and harmony with others to achieve great things. Scales’ charm comes into play at work, too: They often have a knack for public relations or sales. Or Scales’ love of beauty may translate into a career in the arts, or in fashion or interior design. You might expect Scales to be judges and lawyers, but though they often are found in these fields, their tendency to vacillate rather than come to a final decision can sometimes hamper them. But these same qualities can make Scales fine counsellors, where their ability to hear two sides of an issue rather than take sides is a decided asset. And for the same reason,
they can be remarkable teachers, translating a broad array of ideas into a range of possibilities.

Money for Scales is a means to an end, and that end is beauty and harmony. Scales need to be aware, though, that things and their appearance cannot give or replace inner security and harmony, and in fact, they may find that hanging on to a little “mad money” could bring them much closer to such balance than they would have thought possible. Scales are more likely to invest in things and people than in long-term securities, because they like to see an immediate return on their investment in the form of beauty and harmony. The inward reflects the outward here as in no other sign: To Scales, appearances really do matter.
